Takeshita Station opened on 21 September 1913 as an addition to the existing Kagoshima Main Line, operated by the Japanese Government Railways. Located in Hakata-ku of Fukuoka City, it sits 80.9 km from the line's starting point at Mojikō. Control passed to JR Kyushu on 1 April 1987 following the privatisation of Japanese National Railways. From 2009 the station underwent extensive renovations including new elevators, roofing and stairs; in November 2011 a new west-side passageway opened, ending the previous east-only access pattern. A station plaza was completed in front of the west exit in 2013, and a second station building was erected in 1973.

Speakers at the station entrance play "Edelweiss" at 8 a.m., "I've Been Working on the Railroad" at noon, and "Yūyake Koyake" at 6 p.m. daily.
