Shinome Station opened on 1 July 1917 as the temporary terminus of the Tetsudōin Yamaguchi Line, extended from Yamaguchi Station. On 28 April 1918 the line was pushed onward to Mitani, leaving Shinome an intermediate stop. Freight handling ended on 10 August 1971, and on 1 February 1984 the station became unstaffed when parcel handling was also dropped. With the 1 April 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways the station passed to JR West. Located in the mountainous Atō neighbourhood of Yamaguchi city, Shinome has a single island platform serving two tracks for train passing, connected to the station building by a level crossing.

A brick water tower built in 1917 to supply steam locomotives when Shinome was the line's terminus still stands beside the platforms; though the pumps are long gone, the structure remains a popular photo spot, and the station also appeared as fictional Kameda Station in TBS's 2004 adaptation of "Suna no Utsuwa".
