Chōmonkyō Station was opened on 29 April 1922 as a temporary halt on the Yamaguchi Line and was upgraded to a full passenger station on 18 July 1928. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 it came under the West Japan Railway Company. The station sits 32.3 km from the Yamaguchi Line's terminus and consists of a single ground-level side platform serving one bi-directional track; it is unstaffed. The neighbouring Chōmonkyō Gorge is the main feature of the surrounding area.
