Japanese Government Railways opened the station on 1 December 1924 under the name Iyo-Ōi (伊予大井), then the terminus of the Sanyō Line extended westwards from Imabari. Iyo-Ōi became a through-station on 21 June 1925 when the line was further extended to Kikuma. On 1 October 1959, by then operated by Japanese National Railways, it was renamed Ōnishi Station. With the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987 control passed to JR Shikoku, and it now carries station number Y43 on the Yosan Line, served only by local trains between Iyo-Saijō and Matsuyama.
