Nishigawara Station opened on 15 March 2008 on the San'yō Main Line between Takashima and Okayama, 140.8 km from the line's origin at Kōbe. It was a petitioned station whose construction cost was funded in full by the Shujitsu Gakuen educational foundation, with surrounding works paid for by the city of Okayama. The name was contested: JR West preferred the geographic "Nishigawara" while Shujitsu Gakuen wanted "Shujitsu Daigaku-mae", and the compromise displays the formal name in timetables but signs and on-train announcements use "Nishigawara-Shūjitsu". The station has two elevated opposed side platforms; the unattended station is connected by an unsheltered 90-metre ramp. It became fully unstaffed during the 2021 fiscal year. As of late 2023 it is the newest station in Okayama Prefecture.
