Nishi-Kokura Station serves Kokurakita-ku in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, on the Kagoshima Main Line (6.1 km from Mojikō) and the Nippō Main Line (0.8 km from Kokura), with Hitahikosan Line trains also passing through to reach Kokura. The site was first opened by the Japanese Government Railways on 1 April 1915 as the original Kokura Station; that station moved to its present location on 1 March 1958, and the previous site was reopened on 14 December 1974 as Nishi-Kokura. JR Kyushu took over at the 1 April 1987 privatization, and the current elevated station building was completed on 29 March 2003.

Because limited express trains such as the Sonic switch back at Kokura, fares between Nishi-Kokura and Kokura are waived for through-passengers riding services that pass the station twice on the same trip.
