• JR Sanyō Main Line: Iwakuni ⇄ Fujū

Minami-Iwakuni Station opened on 20 June 1952 as a new through-station on the Japanese National Railways San'yō Main Line between Iwakuni and Fujū. Tōyōbō, the textile company whose Iwakuni works was served by an adjoining private siding, contributed a large share of construction costs; that siding remained in use until freight handling at the station was withdrawn on 1 October 1982. Parcel handling ended on 14 March 1985. With the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR West, which opened a Midori no Madoguchi staffed ticket office in November 1992. ICOCA acceptance was added on 1 September 2007.

The textile firm Tōyōbō paid a sizeable share of the original construction costs because its Iwakuni works was connected to the station by a private siding that operated for thirty years.
