Kawake Station was first opened on 10 March 1882 by the Japanese Government Railway on the Hokuriku Main Line but closed on 1 May 1886. It reopened on 1 August 1954 as a passenger-only Japanese National Railways station. With JNR's privatization on 1 April 1987 it passed to JR West. The line section through here was electrified at DC on 14 September 1991, after which the platforms were extended 15 metres for three-car operation and all local trains began stopping. ICOCA service and new-rapid trains arrived on 21 October 2006 with the Tsuruga - Nagahama DC electrification. Station numbering JR-A07 was introduced on 17 March 2018, and season-ticket sales at the window ended on 30 September 2021.

Despite serving an area whose adjacent attractions include the ruined Odani Castle of the Azai clan, the station has no overhead bridge or in-platform crossing — passengers wanting to change platforms must exit the gates and re-enter.
