Imabari Station opened on 11 February 1924 as the terminus of the then Sanyō Line, which had been extended westwards from Iyo-Sakurai. It became a through-station on 1 December 1924 when the line was further extended to Ōnishi. Originally operated by Japanese Government Railways, it later passed to Japanese National Railways, and to JR Shikoku with privatisation on 1 April 1987. Today the elevated station carries number Y40 on the Yosan Line and is served by the Shiokaze, Ishizuchi, Morning Express Matsuyama and Midnight Express Matsuyama limited express services in addition to local trains.
