Haruda Station opened on 11 December 1889 on the privately-run Kyushu Railway alongside the original Hakata to Chitosegawa line, making it one of the oldest stations in Kyushu. After nationalisation on 1 July 1907, it joined the Kagoshima Main Line in 1909. On 7 December 1929, the extension from Chikuzen-Uchino made Haruda the southern terminus of the Chikuhō Main Line. JR Kyushu took over at privatisation in 1987, the current station building was constructed in 1999, all rapid services began stopping in 2002, and SUGOCA service started on 1 March 2009. JR Kyushu reverted the station to direct operation on 1 October 2023.

Before the Sasaguri Line opened in full, Haruda thrived as a transfer point between Chikuhō and Hakata and as a steam-locomotive watering stop for the climb over Hiyamizu Pass.
