Fukuyama Station opened on 11 September 1891 as the temporary terminus of the Sanyō Railway extension from Kasaoka, becoming a through station on 3 November when service was pushed on to Onomichi. The line was nationalized on 1 December 1906 and assigned to the Sanyō Main Line by the 1909 Railway Line Nomenclature. With the breakup of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station passed to the West Japan Railway Company. Built across the southern flank of Fukuyama Castle's outer bailey, it stands inside the castle grounds, with the present concourse occupying the site of the inner Kurogane-mon gate. Today it is the Bingo region's main hub, served by the Sanyō Shinkansen, the Sanyō Main Line, and the Fukuen Line.

Fukuyama Station was built directly through the outer bailey of Fukuyama Castle, and the present-day concourse occupies the site of the castle's inner gate (Kurogane-mon) and its outer bay — making the station literally inside the castle grounds.
