History
The station dates from 30 December 1928, when the Mikuni Awara Electric Railway opened a section of line from Fukuiguchi; it was first called Nishi-Fukui. A 1942 merger of the operator with Keifuku Electric Railway made it a Keifuku station. On 7 January 1979 the Keifuku Nishi-Fukui Building was completed with a new station building inside. A June 2001 head-on collision on Keifuku's Echizen Main Line halted all services and closed the station. It reopened under its present name as a station of Echizen Railway, and through-running with Fukui Railway began on 27 March 2016. The station is numbered E27 and lies in Fukui, 2.8 km from Fukuiguchi. The University of Fukui's main gate is about 150 m away.
Notes
Because the station's name is long, locals sometimes call it by its former name, Nishi-Fukui, or by the name Mitsuwa, after a store that occupied the station building.
