Doi opened on 1 January 1904 as a station of the privately owned Hakatawan Railway (later Hakatawan Railway and Steamship) in present-day Doi, Higashi Ward, Fukuoka. The line was merged into Nishitetsu on 22 September 1942 to become the Kasuya Line, and was nationalised by wartime purchase on 1 May 1944. Parcel handling ended on 5 March 1974 and the station was de-staffed, although contract staff were re-installed on 21 July 1988. JR Kyushu took over on 1 April 1987 in the JNR break-up, automatic ticket gates went in on 19 June 2000, and SUGOCA contactless ticketing followed on 1 March 2009. The station was again left unstaffed on 14 March 2015 when the remote-assistance Smart Support Station system 'ANSWER' was introduced. The line code is JD09.
