Asanami opened on 28 March 1926 as an intermediate stop when the then Sanyō Line — operated by Japanese Government Railways and later Japanese National Railways — was extended from Kikuma to Iyo-Hōjō in what is now the city of Matsuyama. Freight handling ended on 8 November 1971, parcel handling on 1 February 1984, and the station was destaffed on 1 April 1984. Operations passed to JR Shikoku on 1 April 1987 at the JNR privatisation. The station carries number Y46 and is served only by local Yosan Line trains running between Iyo-Saijō and Matsuyama; longer-distance connections require a change. Two opposed side platforms serve two tracks, with a third running behind the island platform as a freight siding.

Through the 1920s and 1930s Asanami was a major pear-shipping point and dedicated 'pear trains' ran from here to Tokyo; postwar the orchards shifted to mandarins and the rail service eventually gave way to road transport on parallel Route 196.
