Yōka Station was first opened on July 1, 1908 as the temporary terminus of the government railway line extended from Wadayama, in what is now Yabu, Hyōgo Prefecture. When the line was further extended to Toyooka on July 10, 1909, it became a through station. In 1912 the segment from Fukuchiyama through Wadayama and Yōka was incorporated into the San'in Main Line. The station was severely damaged in the 1927 Kita Tango earthquake. Freight handling ended in 1982 and parcel handling in 1985, and the station came under JR West at the 1987 privatization. ICOCA support was introduced on March 13, 2021, and the Midori no Madoguchi staffed ticket window closed in February 2023.

In 1955 the station's footbridge was relocated to Yōka from Fukuchiyama Station rather than built new, an early example of station-component reuse on the line.
