• JR Ube Line: Inō (Yamaguchi) ⇄ Kotoshiba

Ube-Shinkawa Station opened on 9 January 1914 with the inauguration of the Ube Light Railway, occupying a site near today's Ube-Chūō bus stop. A track realignment on 1 August 1923 shifted the station to its present location and turned it into a through stop when the line was extended to Tokonami. The line was nationalised in 1943 as the Ube Tōsen and the station was renamed Ube Station; following the route's renaming to the Ube Line in 1948, the station took its current name on 15 September 1964. JR West succeeded JNR on 1 April 1987. The Midori-no-Madoguchi closed on 31 January 2021 and was replaced the next day by a Midori-no-Kenbaiki Plus.

The station and Ube Line trains feature in the 2021 film Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, directed by Ube native Hideaki Anno; the release set off a wave of fan pilgrimages to the platforms after the film opened.
