Tsukijishijo Station opened on 12 December 2000 with the completion of the Toei Oedo Line, serving the Chuo Ward district that gave it its name. As Toei Subway station E-18, it sat next to the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market for nearly two decades; the market relocated to Toyosu in October 2018, leaving the platform shoulder-to-shoulder with the now-demolished site. PASMO acceptance arrived in March 2007, and platform-edge doors entered service on 24 September 2011. Toei has stated the station name will not be changed despite the market's departure, citing recognition and the unresolved redevelopment of the cleared site.

The Oedo Line platforms are sited at the Ginza end of Tsukiji, making the station the closest Oedo entrance to Ginza despite the name pointing eastward to the former market.
