Toyotashi Station opened on 1 November 1920 as Koromo Station on the privately owned Mikawa Railway. The Mikawa Railway was absorbed by Meitetsu on 1 June 1941, bringing the station into the Mikawa Line. The stop was renamed to its present name on 1 October 1959, reflecting the city of Toyota's growth around the Toyota Motor headquarters, and the station building was rebuilt in 1961. Tracks were elevated in 1985 and a new elevated station building opened the same November, with the section to Umetsubo doubled the following year. Manaca IC cards entered service on 11 February 2011.

Toyotashi has the highest ridership of any station on the Meitetsu Mikawa Line, and is connected by a pedestrian deck to Aichi Loop Railway's Shin-Toyota Station next door.
