Toyoda Station opened on 22 February 1901 as a stop on the Kobu Railway in Hino, Tokyo. The Kobu Railway was nationalised on 1 October 1906 and the section became part of the Chuo Main Line by 1911. Freight handling ended on 10 December 1958 and parcels handling on 1 October 1964. A train depot opened within the station grounds on 10 November 1966, later renamed Toyoda Rolling Stock Centre in November 2007. JR East took over at the 1987 privatisation. Automatic ticket gates were installed on 21 May 1993 and Suica use began on 18 November 2001. Major works completed on 12 October 2024 extended platforms to support 12-car operation with Green Cars from the following day.

From January 2010 the platforms use the children's song Takibi (Bonfire) as a departure melody, in honour of the song's lyricist Seika Tatsumi, who lived nearby in Asahigaoka.
