Toyama Station, the principal station of Toyama Prefecture, is a multi-operator complex in Meirin-chō, Toyama. The Toyama Chihō Railway's Toyama-eki Tram Stop sits on the western side of the JR West / Ainokaze Toyama Railway elevated tracks; six tram routes on the Toyama-gun-dōsen and Toyama-kō Line all terminate or pass through here. The Toyama-kō Line lost its JR West service on 28 February 2006 and was originally rerouted into a separate Toyama-eki-kita stop north of the station from 29 April 2006 to 20 March 2020; the line was then extended under the elevated tracks on 21 March 2020 and Toyama-eki-kita was merged into the Toyama-eki stop. The umbrella station originally opened on 20 March 1899 on the Hokuriku Line; on 14 March 2015 with the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension to Kanazawa, the main-line Hokuriku Main Line was transferred to the third-sector Ainokaze Toyama Railway. The Toyama-kō Line and Toyama-gun-dōsen connection at Toyama-eki Tram Stop dates from the 21 March 2020 alignment.

The departure melody used on the Toyama Shinkansen platforms was composed by producer Akira Sudo, a Toyama native. The Hokuriku Shinkansen extension to Kanazawa on 14 March 2015 also pushed the JR West Hokuriku Main Line inside Toyama Prefecture onto the new Ainokaze Toyama Railway third-sector operator on the same day.
