Tomio Station opened on 30 April 1914 with the inauguration of the Osaka Electric Tramway between Uehommachi and Nara. The station, in the city of Nara, passed to Kansai Kyūkō Railway on 15 March 1941, when the Osaka Electric Tramway merged with Sangū Express Railway, and was renamed Tobinomura Station in September of that year. After Kansai Kyūkō merged with Nankai Railway in 1944 to become Kintetsu, the station reverted to its original name on 1 April 1953. A 1965 reconstruction lifted the original ground-level two-platform layout onto a single elevated island platform, removing two level crossings on either side. PiTaPa support was added on 1 April 2007.

On 25 November 1931 an express train running fast through the station's western approach collided with a freight unit attempting a track change, killing three and injuring eighteen.
