Tomio Station opened on 30 April 1914 with the inauguration of the Osaka Electric Tramway between Uehommachi and Nara. The station, in the city of Nara, was renamed Tobinomura Station in September 1941 when the operator merged with Sangū Express Railway to form Kansai Kyūkō Railway. After Kansai Kyūkō merged with Nankai Railway in 1944 to become Kintetsu, the station reverted to its original name on 1 April 1953. A 1965 reconstruction lifted the original ground-level two-platform layout onto a single elevated island platform, removing two level crossings on either side. PiTaPa support was added on 1 April 2007.

On 25 November 1931 an express train running fast through the station's western approach collided with a freight unit attempting a track change, killing three and injuring eighteen.
