Tomino Station opened on 1988-07-01 with the conversion of the former Marumori Line into the third-sector Abukuma Express, and sits 22.1 rail kilometres from the line's official starting point at Fukushima. The station, in Yanagawa-machi Funyū in the city of Date, Fukushima Prefecture, has two opposed side platforms connected by a level crossing and no station building. It is unstaffed. The track layout allows down trains to enter the up main, so many Fukushima-bound services use Tomino as a turnaround; trains without a follow-on duty are deadheaded back to the depot at Yanagawa rather than stabled overnight here.

Tomino's track layout was built to support turnarounds, but because no overnight stabling is available, any non-revenue trains finishing their day here are ferried empty back to the Yanagawa depot.
