Shakudo Station opened on 29 March 1929 as a stop on the Osaka Railway, in present-day Katsuragi, Nara Prefecture. On 9 December 1930 the Nanwa Electric Railway, predecessor of today's Gose Line, connected to the station, making it a junction. Successive mergers placed it on Kansai Express Railway in February 1943 and on Kintetsu Railway in June 1944. An elevated station building with two island platforms and four tracks was built in 1995, and limited express services began stopping in March 1999. ICOCA support followed with PiTaPa in April 2007.

Shakudo is the only passing station between Furuichi and Kashiharajingu-mae on the Minami Osaka Line, which makes it a frequent meeting point for limited express and local trains.
