Sawa Station opened on 25 February 1897 in what is now Hitachinaka, Ibaraki Prefecture, on the route that is today the Joban Line. Operation passed to JR East upon the 1 April 1987 privatisation of the Japanese National Railways. The station is 125.3 km from the line origin at Nippori and is staffed, with two opposed side platforms connected by a footbridge. Sawa serves as a local commuter stop for Hitachinaka and its surrounding districts, with adjacent points of interest including Kasamatsu Stadium and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force base at Camp Katsuta.
