Sasebo-Chūō Station opened on 10 March 1990 on the third-sector Matsuura Railway's Nishi-Kyūshū Line in central Sasebo, Nagasaki. The elevated single-platform stop sits adjacent to the Yonkachō shopping arcade and Sasebo Kyosai Hospital, to which a covered pedestrian passageway connects directly from the platform area. Until 2022 a second walkway linked the station to a now-closed AEON store. Lift access was opened on 12 March 2011 after construction begun in late December 2010. In May 2015 the station gained the nickname "Saruku City 4-3 Arcade Station", referring to Japan's longest contiguous shopping arcade that extends from the station.

The station's official nickname references Japan's longest contiguous shopping arcade, which begins just outside its exit.
