Ryokuentoshi Station opened on 8 April 1976 with the inauguration of the Sagami Railway (Sotetsu) Izumino Line, taking its name from the planned 'Green Garden City' residential development around the site. Built in a valley between the Makigahara and Okazu tunnels, the station was originally configured for eight-car trains; its platforms were later extended to handle ten-car formations. It became a rapid-service stop on 27 February 1999 and a commuter-express stop from 30 November 2019, after through-running to JR began. The station was designated one of the Kantō region's 100 selected stations in 1997 for its observation deck, gallery and garden, and platform-edge doors entered service on 22 January 2023. The station carries number SO32.

The platforms were originally built short for an eight-car line, and Sotetsu held the surrounding land for never-built passing tracks; that reserved space is now planted with oleander and azaleas as a 'garden observation deck'.
