Ōtsukō Station opened on 25 February 1897 on the Nippon Railway as Sekimoto Station (関本駅), serving the village of Sekimoto in northern Ibaraki Prefecture. The line was nationalised in 1906, and in 1909 it was assigned to the Jōban Line under the new national naming scheme. The station was renamed Ōtsukō on 10 May 1950. Freight handling ended in 1976 and parcel service in 1984. Following the 1987 breakup of Japanese National Railways, the station passed to JR East. Suica acceptance began in 2009, and a rebuilt station building inspired by the nearby Rokkakudō pavilion was completed in 2013. Limited-express services ceased calling here in 2015.
