Okuōikojō Station opened in its current location on 2 October 1990, when a part of the Ōigawa Railway's Ikawa Line was relocated to avoid the reservoir created by the Nagashima Dam. Ōigawa Railway formally treats the station as a renamed and relocated successor to the submerged Inuma Station, dating its origins to 1959. The new station was built despite the absence of nearby residents specifically to draw tourists. A single side platform serves a single track, with a small shelter; the station sits on a cliff next to the Okuōi Reservoir and the platform extends partially onto a bridge spanning the lake. The two adjoining bridges are known together as the "Okuōi Rainbow Bridge".

When the lake level is low, the platform and tunnel of the submerged predecessor Inuma Station are still visible from above.
