Nishiya Station opened on 1 December 1926 as a stop on the Jinchu Railway, then a single-line operation between Atsugi and Hoshikawa (now Kamihoshikawa). Operation passed to Sagami Railway when Jinchu was absorbed in 1943, and electrification of the line had been completed the previous year. A footbridge station with an island-platform configuration arrived in May 1966, and double-tracking was completed in 1952. On 30 November 2019 Nishiya became the junction for the new Sōtetsu Shin-Yokohama Line connecting to JR East services via Hazawa Yokohama-Kokudai. Through services to the Tōkyū network began on 18 March 2023, and all express categories now stop at the station.

The Tōkaidō Shinkansen viaduct crosses directly over the station, and one of its support columns stands on a platform.
