History

The private Kitakyushu Railway opened the station on 7 July 1924 as the western end of its line. An extension to the former Higashi-Karatsu station on 15 June 1925 made it a through station, and the railway was nationalized on 1 October 1937. Freight handling ended on 1 December 1961. On 22 March 1983 an old section of the Chikuhi Line starting at this station was closed, and the present line from here to Karatsu Station opened. The station passed to JR Kyushu on 1 April 1987, and SUGOCA IC card use began there on 13 March 2010. Its station number is JK17, and it stands in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture. It has one side platform serving a single track.

Notes

When the station came under state control on 1 October 1937, its name was rewritten from "虹の松原" to "虹ノ松原", swapping the hiragana "の" for the katakana "ノ" while the pronunciation stayed the same.
