Niigata University Station opened on 1984-04-08 on the Echigo Line in Nishi-ku, Niigata, serving the main campus of Niigata University. It is 72.3 kilometres from the line's starting point at Kashiwazaki. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1987-04-01 the station passed to JR East. In 2017 the English romanisation displayed on station signage was changed from "Niigatadaigakumae" to the current "Niigata University" form. The station has a single ground-level side platform serving one bi-directional track and accepts Suica fare cards.

The station's English signage was rewritten in 2017 from the Hepburn-only "Niigatadaigakumae" to the bilingual "Niigata University" form, an unusually visible reversal in JR East's naming conventions.
