Nakajima-Kōen Station opened on 16 December 1971 with the inaugural Kita-Nijūyo-Jō-to-Makomanai stretch of the Sapporo Municipal Subway's Namboku Line. The original concourse and gate sat at the north end, and a second ticket hall and exit 3 were added at the south end on 31 March 2009 to serve growing demand on the park side. A lift was installed in April 2007, requiring two additional gates that are not internally connected, so passengers using only the lift cannot cross between platforms. Platform-edge doors entered service on 6 November 2012, and a sub-name 'Zepp Sapporo Mae' was added to the station signage on 1 December 2025.

Because the lift gates on each platform are not connected internally, passengers who can only use the lifts cannot transfer between the two platforms inside Nakajima-Kōen.
