Matsuoka Station opened on 11 February 1914 with the Kyoto Electric Light Company's Echizen Electric Railway between Shin-Fukui and Ichi-Arakawa (today's Echizen-Takehara). It became part of Keifuku Electric Railway's Echizen line in March 1942. After the head-on Echizen Main Line collision of June 2001 forced a suspension of all services, the facilities were transferred to Echizen Railway on 1 February 2003 and the station reopened on 20 July 2003 as part of the Katsuyama Eiheiji Line. The original wooden station building, with its white-painted walls and tiled roof reflecting a Meiji-era Japanese-Western blend, was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property on 25 July 2011.

In 2017 University of Fukui students installed a Dragon Quest-themed signboard on the platform, featuring an 8-bit pixel-art design on the platform side and a mosaic on the station-building side.
