Kōda Station traces its history to Ashiya Signal Stop, opened by the Japanese Government Railway in April 1906 on the Tōkaidō Line between Gamagōri and Okazaki. After a local fundraising and petition campaign by Aimi Village officials, the surrounding village renamed itself Kōda in July 1908, and the stop was then upgraded to a full station and renamed Kōda on 11 September 1908. Freight operations ceased in October 1971 and parcel service in 1984. JNR privatisation transferred the station to JR Central on 1 April 1987, TOICA IC turnstiles were installed on 25 November 2006, and station number CA50 was assigned in March 2018.

Although the station is read "Kōda", the surrounding town's name is now read "Kōta" — the kanji are identical, but the readings diverged after the station was named in 1908.
