Kobe-Sannomiya Station, in the Sannomiya district at the heart of Kobe, is a major interchange anchoring the city's transport network. The Hanshin Electric Railway station opened on 12 April 1905 as 'Kobe Station' and went through several renamings before adopting its current name in 2013 along with station number HS 32. The Hankyu Railway terminal followed in 1936, originally signed simply 'Kobe' and known for its Art Deco arch over the tracks. Both Hanshin and Hankyu facilities were damaged in the 17 January 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake; Hanshin services were fully restored by 26 June 1995, while Hankyu's irreplaceable arch was lost.

The 1936 Hankyu station's original Art Deco arch was destroyed beyond repair in the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake; the post-2020 replacement building mimics the original styling but deliberately omits the arch over the tracks.
