• JR Nippō Line: Kirishima-Jingu ⇄ Ōsumi-Ōkawara

Kita-Naganoda Station was opened on 6 December 1932 as an intermediate stop on the new link that joined the Japanese Government Railways Kokuto-West Line (which then terminated at Kirishima-Jingū) and the Kokuto-East Line (which terminated at Ōsumi-Ōkawara). With the link in place, through-traffic from Kokura to Kagoshima became possible and the entire route was redesignated the Nippō Main Line. CTC was installed through this section on 1 October 1979, at which point the station became unstaffed. It passed to JR Kyushu at the privatisation of JNR on 1 April 1987 and remains unstaffed today, with a small shelter built on a hillside above the two side platforms.

The "Kita" ("north") in the station name was originally added to distinguish it from Naganoda Station on the now-closed Ōsumi Line, which lay in the same broad region.
