Kinoshita Station opened on 22 February 1911, when the Ina Densha Kidō (later Ina Denki Tetsudō) extended its line from Matsushima (now Ina-Matsushima) to this point as a temporary terminus. On 3 November of the same year the line was extended onward, making it an intermediate station. It was nationalised as part of the Iida Line on 1 August 1943, lost freight and parcel handling in December 1971, and came under JR Central control on 1 April 1987 with the dissolution of JNR. The station was reduced to a small waiting shelter in February 1997. It has one side platform on the west side of the line.

A grand zelkova tree stands in front of the station as part of the precincts of Nangu Shrine.
