Keyakidaira Station first appeared on 1 July 1937 as the upper terminus of a private industrial line operated by Nippon Electric Power between Kokurobe and Keyakidaira. On 16 November 1953 the line — by then in the hands of Kansai Electric Power Company (Kanden) — was authorised under the Local Railway Act for passenger service and the station opened to the public. Kurobe Gorge Railway was established on 4 May 1971 to take over operation, and the new company began running the line on 1 July 1971. The station sits at an elevation of 599 m and is the easternmost ordinary-rail station in Toyama Prefecture.

Trains continue south from Keyakidaira on Kansai Electric's restricted-access Kurobe Senyō Tetsudō, which links a Lower Keyakidaira platform to an Upper Keyakidaira platform 200 m higher via a vertical-shaft elevator capable of carrying a single railcar at a time.
