Kawawachō Station opened on 30 March 2008 with the inauguration of the Yokohama Municipal Subway Green Line between Nakayama and Hiyoshi. The station name was taken from the Kawawa district. Subway Wi-Fi service began on 1 May 2012. As part of preparations for six-car Green Line trains, the platform doors at Kawawachō were temporarily removed on 1 September 2021 to allow stopping-position changes and were reinstalled in February 2022.
