Kassemba Station opened on 1 April 1929 when the Tobu Nikko Line was extended from Sugito (now Tōbu-Dōbutsu-Kōen) to Shin-Kanuma. During the Pacific War the line between Kassemba and Tōbu-Nikkō was singled in January 1943 to free up rails for the war effort; the section was redoubled on 20 July 1973, restoring double track to the whole Nikkō Line. The station became unattended on 1 September 1973, and platforms were lengthened from four-car to six-car capacity in March 2006. A new station building entered service in May 2007, replacing the original wooden structure dating from 1929.

The station name commemorates the Kawarada Battle of 1523, in which armies under Utsunomiya Tadatsuna and Minagawa Munenari clashed nearby.
