Kannoura opened on 26 March 1992 as the southern terminus of the Asa Seaside Railway's Asatō Line, with station number AK30; for many years it was both the line's end and the easternmost rail station in Kōchi Prefecture. With dual-mode-vehicle (DMV) introduction planned for the line, refurbishment began on 10 January 2019: the visitor parking lot and bus stop were moved about 50 m south. On 23 October 2020 the line was extended by 0.1 km and Kannoura Station was abolished — replaced by Kannoura Signal Station; passenger handling continued at the old station facilities until 30 November before being replaced by a substitute bus from 1 December 2020. The DMV service started on 25 December 2021, when the mode-interchange entered operation and a new "Kannoura Station" bus stop in front of the building took over passenger boarding/alighting.

When the world's first dual-mode-vehicle service began on the Asatō Line in December 2021, Kannoura was converted from a rail station to a signal station: the elevated platform was closed to the public, and DMV passengers now board at a bus stop in front of the building instead.
