• Nara Line: Shinden (Kyoto) ⇄ Nagaike

Jōyō Station opened on 11 July 1958 as a new infill station on the Japanese National Railways Nara Line between Nagaike and Shinden. The station passed to JR West with JNR privatisation on 1 April 1987. A passing loop was activated on 16 March 1991 and an elevated station building opened on 21 May the same year. The station became a stop for rapid services on 22 October 1992, and station number JR-D12 was assigned when JR West introduced numbering in March 2018. Two side platforms are connected by the overhead concourse, with ICOCA-compatible turnstiles. The Midori-no-Madoguchi ticket office closed on 31 October 2024.

Although the station shares its name with the host city, it actually sits in the Terada district — the same district name as the next station to the south on the line.
