Izumi Station opened on 4 March 1940 as a station of the Fukushima Electric Railway (Fukushima Denki Tetsudō), the predecessor of today's Fukushima Kōtsū Iizaka Line. It is located 3.0 km from the Iizaka Line's Fukushima terminus.

Izumi is the only station on the Iizaka Line whose platforms are connected by an overhead footbridge; the rest of the line uses level pedestrian crossings.
