• San'in Main Line: Higashi-Matsue (Shimane) ⇄ Arashima

Iya Station opened on 8 November 1908 when the state-built line was extended west from Yasugi to Matsue, in present-day Matsue, Shimane Prefecture. Freight handling ended in 1983 and parcel handling in 1985. With the JNR breakup on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR West. An east-side connecting bridge to the south of the railway was opened on 18 April 1999. During the 2001 San'in-line speed-up works in Shimane Prefecture, the central track was removed and the layout reduced from two-island/three-track to two opposed side platforms; the 2 km of double track from the station's western end to Yonago was also commissioned at the same time. The station was directly staffed again from 1 July 2021 before becoming unstaffed for good on 2 October 2021.

The double track stretching about 2 km west from Iya towards Yonago was originally laid in JNR days but used as single track; the second rail was only commissioned in 2001 when the surrounding speed-up works were completed.
