Iwamuro

Iwamuro Station, on JR East's Echigo Line, opened on 25 August 1912 as Wanō Station on the private Echigo Railway, with a staffed office, four platforms and freight sidings. The line was nationalised on 1 October 1927. The station was renamed Iwamuro on 25 December 1965, and on 1 January 1973 all freight handling was withdrawn, after which the sidings and two of the side platforms were eventually lifted. With the 1 April 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways it became a JR East station. Suica fare cards have been accepted since 21 January 2006, and on 31 March 2007, after ninety-five years of attended operation, the ticket office finally closed and ticket sales moved to a vending machine.

Before 1991, residents east of the line had to detour to a level crossing to reach the station; the present underpass was built when Wanō Elementary School relocated to that side and triggered a wave of housing development.
