Inuyama Station opened on 6 August 1912 with the inauguration of the Inuyama Line. Through service from Oshikiri-machi in Nagoya began in May 1923 along with the first express trains. The line was extended in 1926, the station was relocated to its present site in April 1927, and the Komaki Line connected here in April 1931. The Inuyama Line was raised to 1,500 V in 1948, with the Komaki Line in 1964 and the Hiromi Line in 1965. The east-west passageway and current station building opened on 24 February 1985, and from 2010 the building was reworked into a fully accessible structure with twin wickets, completed on 20 December that year.

Among Meitetsu's current rolling stock, only the 4000 series never calls at Inuyama; every other type uses the station, making it the most universally served stop on the network.
