Iibama Station opened on 10 January 1959 as a passenger-only stop on the JNR Akechi Line. With the third-sector transfer of the line to the Akechi Railway on 16 November 1985, the station passed to its current operator. The station carries number 7 and serves as the central rail point for the Iibama district of Iwamura, Ena.

Iibama is a single-platform unstaffed station set among open farmland; the area around the station is surrounded by rural landscapes. National Route 257 runs nearby, and Iwamura's Tomita district — designated as one of Japan's most beautiful rural landscapes — lies within walking distance.
