• JR Sotobo Line: Chiba ⇄ Soga

Hon-Chiba Station opened on 25 February 1896 as Samukawa Station on the private Bōsō Railway, when the line first reached south from Chiba to Soga. It took the present Hon-Chiba name on 28 January 1902 and was nationalised on 1 September 1907. The original site, near today's Keisei Chiba-Chūō Station, was heavily damaged in the 7 July 1945 Chiba air raid, and the station was rebuilt on its current Naga­su site as part of post-war reconstruction on 1 February 1958. Through-running into the Sōbu Line led to elevation of the line: the up-bound track was raised in December 1983 and the down-bound track on 26 May 1986. JR East assumed operations on 1 April 1987, and on 4 December 2010 the platform was lengthened to handle 15-car Sōbu-Line rapid services.

In 1972 Emperor Hirohito boarded at this station on his way to inspect the Chiba Prefectural Cancer Center.
