Hiratachō Station opened on 8 April 1963 when Kintetsu's Suzuka Line was extended from Suzukashi Station, making it the line's new terminus. The original 1-platform / 2-track island arrangement was reduced in 1982 when the south track was lifted, leaving a single bi-directional side platform on the south side from which all trains depart toward Ise-Wakamatsu. The lifted track-bed now serves as a waiting room and bicycle parking. PiTaPa service began on 1 April 2007, and automatic ticket gates and fare-adjustment machines came into operation on 26 October 2012. Although a staffed station managed by Shirako, it ranks as the busiest stop on the Suzuka Line. Station number L33.

Local signage and shop names usually shorten the station's name to "Hirata" (e.g., "Hirata Station Front Branch"), even though the station and its rail-line designation officially use "Hiratachō."
