Higashi-Funaoka Station opened on 1 April 1968 as Yokohashi Station on the Maruko Line of Japanese National Railways, serving the town of Shibata in southern Miyagi. When the line was transferred to the third-sector operator Abukuma Express on 1 July 1986, the station was renamed Higashi-Funaoka and rebuilt as a passing point with two opposing platforms. It is unattended today, and its toilet block carries the distinctive Abukuma Express livery. The station promotes itself locally as a place known for cherry blossom and chrysanthemum displays, and it sits next to the JGSDF Camp Funaoka.

Stationside toilets are painted in the Abukuma Express train livery rather than standard JR colours.
